Not even close yet: I have almost all the "outside" clues and most of the ones that start on the outside, but tracking them through the knight moves is pretty desperate at the moment. I'm toying with the idea of spreadsheeting it (or just using a bigger version of the grid) and putting each letter in whatever squares the moves get to until I find some matches. Trouble is, I'm finding the "inside" clues the most adamantine. Anyone out there reporting success just yet?

P-P 35d is in Chambers - I am also stuck on 23d (also 30 & 36ac). I think I will put this one aside and hope that this afternoons (only an hour away!) is somewhat less tricky.
Thanks BlackHugh - I've got a little longer than you since I don't see it till Saturday morning. Hope is fading though!
I too am stuck on 23 & 36 and don't think it's possible to do the knight's moves without them.
p-p Bradfords and Onelook will be a help for 5 and 23.

Oops, the problems of being on a train!

Still struggling away. Clamzy's post on Wednesday does not encourage us!!
Contendo, if you're missing 23 then the answer's almost certainly not here
Thanks Mysteron - only one more to go!
Yes! I've finished. I don't think I've ever worked so hard but I shall certainly sleep well.
Very difficult - even with a few missing my grid looks like the wiring diagram for the Large Hadron Collider. I thought 19 was easy as was 36 but 5, 23 and 30 seem completely mystifying. The 2 words sprung out quite early though and that helped a lot. My sapping morale has though been boosted by the arrival of a spanking new Brewers which arrived a couple of days ago - first I knew about my good fortune!
Congratulations the_heisman!
Thanks Pushmi-pullyu. Your congratulations are very appropriate as it was the crossword featuring you!
wow Zabadak, loving your use of adamantine.....not an adjective I have heard used before. I guess you will be going to see X men. There is a small part only for Wolverine, pithy as usual!!
How can 5 down perform a knight's move in accordance with the instructions, given its length and the number of letters in the periphery? Or is that giving too much away?
The only knight's move would be from the 4th to the 5th letter
Thought that so baffled by interplay with 4 and 12 down.
12 down Iain
Still confused - and lacking answers to about six clues. Re earlier references to red herrings, are two thematic six letter words, which are fairly readily seen as forming, such a red herring?
