ok I've got PHILISTINE which uses up 4 of the 8 clues mentioned in the preamble PLUS the 'L' in BAILIFF - so what about the other 4 letters 16ac H, 36ac N, 17d D and the E in38 ac.

I've sent this off now, so can't quite remember...but some letters are common to across and down. It does all work out. As long as you have PHILISTINE highlighted the puzzle is solved I think. Good luck .

Also will add that I had wrong missing letters all over the place! Once I got the highlighted word I went back over the clues and saw where I's gone wrong.
