Probably ends with the opponents ES (east and south in bridge), and def is prob 'they will be saved'. Are you sure about the C?
Question Author
Thanks.

I thought aces (Tennis serve ) may be the ending.

The down clue for C (for canto) is
Contralto accepted books of melody. I have the answer as Canto.

You save a place for someone. Could it be places?
But not sure where the discourse fits in.
Canto's fine, so the C's right. Aces doesn't really fit the wording. It's an oddly vague definition: 'they will be saved'. And just can't think of a four-letter (???c) religious discourse. Unless I'm reading the clue completely wrongly...

The L's right?!
Question Author
L could be wrong.

Appear to follow sparkle in selfmade man (8)

Lifepeer is what I have. Sparkle = life.

BTW, the down clue for first letter is :
Square part of musical instrument is returned to ogres (5)

?TEN?
Etens -giants - would fit S(quare) and nete reversed
For your original one Elects?- definition only - those chosen for salvation.
I'm not convinced by LIFEPEER so maybe the L is wrong.
That would make the Religious discourse letters: ???C?S
select
flocks?
Yes, elects may be right (ES opponenents, and is LECT an abberviation for religious discourse?
Question Author
Thank you all.
I think etens and elects seem right.

These clues are from Crossword Centre's September puzzle.
I still have 35A to go and then figure out what the instructions mean.

Help deeply appreciated.
I am not convinced by any of these.
Question Author
If etens is right for ogres, then the letters are el?c?s.

Reference to eten is:
Tolkien mentioned again ogres out of context in analyses of the name Orc: "...the gloss Þyrs 'ogre'..." , and of the name Ettendales: "This is meant to be a Common Speech (not Elvish) name, though it contains an obsolete element eten 'troll, ogre'."

A Lifepeer is appointed and hence selfmade man applies. So L is correct.
Now we are left with el?c?s.
I'm still not sure why it has to be LIFEPEER. Yes, sparkle= life. But where does PEER come from.
lifespan?!
Question Author
Because the letters are LIFE?E?R
and E and R are correct.
Peer as equivalent of appear.
I'm still not sure, hankir, but I have nothing better yet. It probably does start with LIFE but have you got all 4 letters of LIFE?
Maybe I'm not alert today but how is PEER the equivalent of APPEAR?
Lifepeer is 4,4 - does the 8 allow a 4,4 answer or should it be one word?
Question Author
Sometimes the letter count is wrong.
Last week's Azed had a clue shown as (10) but it was a 4 word answer.

New York Times Crossword Puzzle dictionary lists peer as equivalent of appear.
peer = look = appear?

The Exchange crossword is at:

Yes, peer= look, but I cant think why look= appear.
I'm not saying you're wrong- it's just that I still don't see it.
What letters do you have (I assume you don't have all the letters for the LIFE part, although LIFE does seem likely for the first bit?
Ta
