Thought I'd begin the Friday club. What joy to see another new Listener name and what succinct cluing! A speedy fill then a delightful pdm for me with the theme cleverly holding it all together and what head-scratching before the final touch fell into place. Magic, thank you Ilver!

I enjoyed this although stared far too long at the final grid before having a eureka moment on the daily commute.

Is the quiz problem that Sophie Coren one on bbc4 - when was it and does anyone if it's still available on iplayer?
One day
Question Author
Victoria Coren, Only Connect, is available on iplayer in the UK.
All of the programs, not just the most recent, from the current series of Only Connect are available on the BBC iPlayer, as RR says, in the UK until 12th December. Program 6 from a couple of weeks back featured a team of Listener solvers, and one of those taking part in last night's episode, Prog. 6, James Hastie, is the setter Ten-Four.
Erm, sorry to be thick, what's BRB?
Big Red Book - Chambers.
Please help - I solved this crossword on Saturday morning and have stared at it now for three days for the final letter change. I have gone through this thread numerous times and I am still stuck. Is the final six letter thematic linked to the perimeter or the title? Is the letter change to produce a similar item to the perimeter? If yes is my 2003 Chambers lacking something?
Al, u10's post at 18:10 on Sunday (previous page) contains a whopping huge hint.
Bit of a swine this one
Really enjoyed this one, even though I had never heard of the theme before.
Has anyone encountered problems getting into the crossword club site? It appears there is a problem with the security.
Now appears to be resolved, but see for example discussion at

Lovely crossword - didn't take long to fill the grid. Stared at the 8 letters, read the preamble, thought - and realised what was going on. Stared again, thinking that there were lots of possibilities - pdm again. Now what is this changing letter. Well it has to be that one - but why? Suddenly another pdm and I am home - much earlier than usual.

What shall I do for the rest of the week? Might have to garden, sort out the loft or do housework - wish I hadn't had that sequence of pdms so quickly! But I do like crosswords where I have to think and then think again and this one certainly gave me that. Many thanks, Ilver.

Contendo - good to see that you went through the same process and solution - makes me feel that I am in good company.

Have a good term Jim360. I'm sure that you will find the odd Saturday or 10 when you can stop work and start doing interesting things like crosswords. In my day, Thursday was teh Listener day, so I tried to solve it in teh Library rather than going to sleep in lectures.
Thanks Perseverer
Easterfool - Good company? I'm not so sure.
? What shall you do for the rest of the week easterfool - why not take a look at this year’s Azed “Wrong Number” Competition Puzzle:

Most enjoyable, this one. Seemed to start off easy, but I was still checking three wordplays after finishing. Succession of good pdms and an unfamiliar theme. I liked the precision of the perimeter entries, in which indecision was sorted by the BRB. A big groan on the final 6-letter word, since I had been looking for another similar candidate - agree with several comments here that this was easier to find than the one-letter change. The relative direction of these two was also unexpected. High marks, Ilver!

RR, abns, perseverer and others: “Only Connect” program 8 (Monday night’s one) is repeated tomorrow on BBC 4: Thu 6 Oct 2011 23:00.
Thanks all re: Only Connect and apologies to Victoria Coren if she's a regular poster for getting her name.

Just watched the Listener episode. One of the team members has a surname that's very similar to a username here - is it rude to enquire if there's any connection?
If you are referring to Tilley/tilbee then I doubt it ...
I'm in the same boat.. this is my first Listener and I managed to complete the grid together with the unclued perimeter. Now stuck. But what is BRB and PDM?
I can answer my own question now- BRB and PDM now clear to me. Still haven't twigged the solution though.
Hi sloanyjohn! It's always good to welcome a new solver. I hope you get hooked like the rest of us. I'm sure you are aware that on this site we don't like to give away too direct hints or answers. However, I do see that there are some useful comments elsewhere. I think if you search "Listener 4157" there are 3 answerbank threads. One should be very useful. Apologies to the rest of you if you think I am not being subtle enough, but it is surely good to encourage newcomers.
