Perhaps it is too much Sammy Hagar addling my brain, but I can't finish today's DM crossword.
20 across, size, for example, ring for intimate friend, (5,3). I have A?T?R, ?G? and am sure it is "alter ego", but why?
23 down, occupy block, (4) I have F?L? and suspect it is "fill" but, again, why?
For 8 down I have Papua New Guinea, but how do you get this from the clue?

Cheers for the help Janpot, I didn't realise thinking was involved. God only knows how I got the rest of the answers. I've spent ages on the Papua New Guinea clue, removing the word "genuine" to see if it is an anagram, but am still stuck, hence my reason for posting.
