EV 990: Whimsy by Rustic

As dr b is in Denver and will be a bit late getting to this week's EV, I thought I'd start this weeks thread. Not many gifts on the first pass through the clues, unfortunately. However, I cold solved, and managed to correctly place several of the answers in the NW and SE corners. A dive for ODQ revealed the "Whimsy" early on. That made the solving and subsequent population of the other 2 quadrants relatively easy. Have got my eye on a Heritage Road, 2010 Reserve, Merlot for quaffing tonight, cheers!

Enjoyed this - fair clues and no tenuous endgame - would have finished a lot sooner if I had not mis-interpreted the x-y instruction and had the wrong extra letter in 15! Not heard the whimsy before - I like it.

Hello x_word_fan, is that the Hardys Bin 53 that was on special offer at Sainsbury's recently at 3 bottles for £12.00? If it is, it was most enjoyable. I have some Hardys Bin 53 2009 Special Release 2009 Chardonnay, that was subject to the same offer! White is not my wine colour of preference, unless it is a decent fizz, but keep some racked for visitors.

Very enjoyable. Fair clues but some rather obscure answers. It helped that I'd heard the whimsy before. ( We were asked in our quiz league last year who said it. )

Hi all, managed to get this done in half-hour stretches. Nice puzzle, getting the quote about halfway through certainly helped.

Denver has been mid-70s while here; heading home tomorrow - good thing as the forecast here is for 40 degrees and snow!!

Like other contributors I enjoyed this puzzle but hadn't realised the attribution of the quotation until I googled it.
