Who lives in France? We’re on this in England (5). Can anyone tell me why the answer is alert?

This isn't an answer, but applying very tortuous logic, the French for "who lives" is QUI VIT, and the phrase "on the qui vive" means "alert" or "on the lookout" - by the way, are you sure of the cross clue letters ? and if you are and the answer IS "alert" do you need to know the reason for it ?

The solution appeared today - so I'm absolutely sure the answer is alert.

I always like to understand the derivation of any answer in the crosswords I do.
