I know svelte has been given earlier, but my Chambers gives nine alternative adjectives for svelte: none of them is a synonym for refined and all of them essentially mean slim, i.e. lithe lissom graceful. The Mepham woman strikes again?
Sorry, Lie-in King, I don't buy that. Any thesaurus will get you refined from urbane or vice-versa, but find me one that will get you svelte from or to either. Not surprising, because svelte is an attribute of physique, whereas urbane and refined are attributes of manner.
Thanks, mamalynne, my head is bloody but unbowed and I can only console myself that Chambers agrees with me.
Lie-in King, I never suggested there was a better answer that fitted, only that it was a lousy clue. Which it is. Meanwhile I congratulate mamalynne and you on digging deeper than I did.
