I have completed grid and have the 20 clashes any hints re resolving clashes and/or grid entry which shows which side is which? any help appreciated

Hi, G. The two-word and six-word phrases at 14 across each read in toto - as you might expect - from left to right, so the two halves of the complete crossword can go together in only one way. (The clue presents them in reverse order...first half = lower.)
Once aligned thus, have a look at Column 10 in the left-hand half and - ignoring the two letters in the 14 acrosses - from top to bottom you'll see a name in the possessive. Look it up in Chambers and, having done so, you'll see an accompanying word created in the same way in Column 1 in the right-hand half.
Having said that - perhaps because it is all too scientific for me - I have no idea what the significance of the two letters involved in the clashes IS nor their positioning. Given that the upper 14 across uses only one of the options while the lower uses only the other, I assume the whole top half of each grid uses one and the whole bottom half uses the other.
If you can see a more likely explanation, come back and tell me, please.

My dear fellow, any time Gribble asks for help and I am in a position to offer it, I do so. Both she and I are well aware of what hardline Listenerites think of that and neither of us cares.
I see you've been around AnswerBank for five minutes whilst I've been here for a decade. Consequently, you will doubtless be unaware of the battles that have arisen because of this in the past. My point is absurdly simple and it's this...either ALL prize crossword clues are sacrosanct before the closing-date or NONE are. Once you've been around for a while, you'll see that several of the Listenerites think nothing about giving answers to ongoing Azed, Mephisto, Guardian, Spectator and similar crosswords' clues. My advice to you, therefore, is this...Persuade THEM to stop and I might consider doing likewise as regards THEIR pet crossword. OK?

I'll leave it at that, as I have no intention whatsoever of becoming embroiled in any further debate on the matter.

Quizmonster having googled it, I think the sides have to be left and right, the C for cold on left hand grid and H for hot on right , as 14a answer is Heat, I don't see any significance of the position of clashes though apart from same amount each side, many thanks again

I would never have been able to work it out either, but for the fact that I spotted the surname and imagined it might be a reference to another person of that name who WAS a lawbreaker...ex-MP and newspaper proprietor...even though I was convinced the 'law' concerned was almost certainly a scientific one. I even wondered whether he had ever been nicknamed 'Mental M...'! (See Col 9)
I agree with you about the disposition of the clashing letters.

V_E, I'm afraid I took your, "Monstrous...!" at face value. As you say, one cannot always interpret written material in the manner in which it was intended.
