Quite a straightforward offering - I am a little unsure why the 5 cells are "aptly displayed"

Agreed; nothing particularly good or bad about this, so an "average" EV in my book. I suppose the form of the highlighting could relate to the last word of the quote, but in that case don't we have a choice when it comes to highlighting the 5th letter of the author's name? I can't see why one would be preferred to the other, but maybe I'm missing something there.
And another in the 'agreed' camp. Always annoying to get to the end and have a niggle...
As ever these days I seem to be paddling like fury underneath and getting absolutely no-where on the surface, just haven't caught up since having a few days off in Nov!! So, haven't opened the paper yet but am feeling positive! Until tomorrow no doubt, lovely to see you posting again Jogler(s) how's the Grannying going? Twins fit and well? crawling all over everywhere and locks on all cupboards...............?
Saw your post on last week's Christina, that sounds like some trip, hope you manage to avoid the earthquakes!
Sorry, forgot to ask drb about his weather, you seem to have all sorts of extreme weather in your neck of the woods drb, what's it up to at the moment? A lot of the UK has had some fairly hefty dumps of snow over the past 24 hours, we have just had the usual downpour!
Hi dd (and Jogler!). Yes, we have been having our usual extreme weather - but in this case extremely nice! Last week we had a few days in the mid-60s, today still a lovely 46 with sun. thank you for taking our snow. Still, plenty of time for typical midwest weather to reappear, so we are not out of the woods yet.

Superbowl Sunday! Wooo!!
Ty, Dd, Grannying is indeed going well - little monkeys are into and onto everything and can act together by racing in opposite directions seemingly completely randomly. We are starting our last week at the coalface before three weeks in the States (/wave drb) where my back is looking forward to a complete rest!
Hi All, Nothing to much to tax the old grey cells......yet again!
Oh joy, was able to get to this first thing, as weather kept me at home, and like others soon had it completed. But victory dance was curtailed when I discovered the boiler had gone into 'lock down'. I fear I may have run out of oil. Thank God for the wood burner, even if I am confined to one room, the other rooms rapidly becoming like the frozen wastes outside.
Oh and Devadolly, I have discovered that not only do I have to try and dodge the earthquakes, but apparently provision has been made by the Hong Kong government regarding what to do should there be typhoon signal No.8/ Black Rainstorm warning.
Hi All
Just to add to the niggles I think I've spotted two typos: 27a has 9 letters and should 15a read "inverted"
Hope all is well. Snow came and went very quickly here but not before many cars had been abandoned. Bty our village / town has been awarded the golden cone for the worst roadworks in Britain. Now there's a claim to fame!!!
Sounds good Christina! Our niece spend years in HK and they just used to stay in and watch the buildings around them sway in the typhoons.........! It will be fine.
drb, there is currently a cookie on my screen advertising a hotel in Utah with a picture of dog sled and huskies, I'm staying here in our weak but chilly sunshine just looking at the dusting of snow on Ingleborough, that's near enough to the white stuff for me.
Don't break any bones jogler's.
Stuck on 1d - any help?
Forget my previous post. Now have 1d
We will try our best to get through unscathed.. we are very fair weather skiers and like the groomed pistes - we usually go to Utah.... and will not be making an exception this year! We don't feel the need to strap on the planks every day and do other stuff as well; I haven't tried snowshoeing yet but keep toying with the thought. Huskies we haven't yet seen - sleds and horses yes, but dogs so far no.... will keep you posted! Interesting that there is not much snow on Ingleborough - I guess it was coming in from the east and hit the NY Moors instead; we have none in Southampton but had a couple of inches in London. I am not envying you Christiana with a locked down boiler - hope it is up and running again. Ringer, the h-g agreed with your inverted comment and hadn't noticed the other one. Has anyone shed any light on the 5 cells (vis a vis "apt" and last letter). This has turned into an essay... apologies.
We got stuck in snow in Canterbury at the weekend, I then lost my train ticket this morning and realised I had left my wallet at home and now we have a burst pipe. And to cap all of that I am not sure which letter to highlight as there seems to be a choice of two for the last one. Oh well just one of those days I suppose
Hello everyone,
Was subject to one of the heavy snowfalls, that Dd mentioned, so only managed to get access to EV today, a relatively easy clued grid population, so gallopped through that. Having found the quotation there was no problem populating the perimeter! Just wondering if the "aptly displayed" 5 cells are related to one of the foot movements related to one of the 8 perimeter entries.
As an alternative I thought it may be representing something to rest on after having undertaken the perimeter activities.
