I thought that it could be nine, but I don't quite see how it connects with the clue can you explain, I am trying to get into cryptic crosswords, as you have probably guessed.
Old bob - shilling or 'S' away from six leaves IX which is nine in roman numerals
Also six + three of course.
Old Bob = s (for shilling), leaves six = ix (s - ix), ix = 9 (roman numerals)
