Many thanks, kalahari (6 out of 6 !) and jillywhiskas. I would never have got any of the answers except perhaps for "whizz" - but slang always fools me. My searches via Google proved remarkably unhelpful - sometimes there was almost enough information to take a degree in the subject but accompanied by an infuriating avoidance of giving a direct or helpful answer.
