Got 12a now - CERNE
34 looks good. Roa(n) + R(ight) (Roar of the swell sea)

For 10a I now have BE????
Hi professorplum13. 10a ends in OF and its last three letters mean "loot". Hope that helps! I've now completed everything, including erasing my "normal answer" but am struggling to find the 8 cells I should highlight. Wish me luck!
Doh! Have now found those 8 cells! I was looking in the wrong place and they were staring me in the face all the time! A good luck wish and a cup of coffee must have helped. Fun puzzle.

thanks indy-trier - managed to get 10a last night, but I still need 7d if you can help at all:
Gravels of Old England upset Old English author (the extra letter is the L probably in gravels) I have ?OR?S and want to put eorls but not sure??
I have done the 1st part of the highlighting, but can't complete the perimeter and don't know how to do the "7 cell high lighting" - I assume it's something to do with the "uninterrupted grass" and the "hare sitting up" but I am no wiser!

if you can help/guide me please!
OE = Old English
RLS = Robert Louis Stevenson
if that's any help
Question Author
That's how I thought of it wharton, but where's the defn?
Question Author
Found the hare - just have the perimeter to complete now.
grave = count, prefect, a person holding office
eorl = obsolete form of 'earl'
hope this helps
Question Author
Thanks wharton - i should have turned the page!
You need 4 different grasses in the perimeter , starting off gardeners garters in the top left
I have only one question: is the 7-letter hare to be highlighted in the grid (=solution part iii) a nationality to be found in the first two lines, but not with all 7 letters in a row? Can't see any other possibility unless I've got something wrong! I started late on this one but have everything else solved (seems to be becoming my typical situaton lately)!
All solved now: had overlooked the right animal despite testing everything, as I thought!
