many thanks, it's my first posted question & I now realise that I mis-constructed my title so I appreciate your help even more
Welcome to AB, rennie57!

You'll soon get the hang of it - hope you enjoy your time here :-)
I was stuck on that one too! All I could come up with was pie fatherlike which doesn't make sense! As usual, Lie in King came up with the goods (on your thread rennie57).
By the way Lie In King, I forgot to thank you a few months ago when you solved my last clue. I didn't post a question because most of the time, a search in the search box reveals the answer. I won a Cross ball point pen so at least the ink is yours! I'll probably give the pen to my son when he is old enough not to lose it. He's 13 now so maybe in another 20 years!

By the way LIK, do you ever send in your personal solutions to the papers and have you ever won anything?

Welcome rennie57!
Hi qawdrg - congratulations on your win! :-)

I send some in & have won a few times - Times Jumbo Cryptic was the most recent, about 3 years ago. Before that, I had 5 or 6 wins (including a Cross ballpoint!) over a 6-month period in around '99/'00...
I'm pleased you've had a few wins Lie-in King!
I don't know if you are still following this thread rennie57 but watch out for MarkRae! He's a good solver too but if you don't do a search before posting he'll be down on you like a ton of bricks but he's right. He's one of the main charcaters on this web site as well as Lie-in King.

Weather good in Southampton. I'm drinking beer in the garden!

Best regards to all and do send in the crosswords.

I've probably spent more on stamps than my one cross ballpoint is worth but its given me great satisfaction to win a prize.
