EV 1021: Blown Off Course by Jaques
25 Answers
A rainy morning here in the West of Ireland, but I managed to get the last copy of the Telegraph, so was able to enjoy this excellent crossword - not the most difficult grid fill, but an entertaining theme.
I don't have a Brewers here, but a few key words jumped out at me.
I did wonder if publishing a few weeks later would have been more appropriate.
Thanks to Jaques, and greetings to all EVers

I filled the grid fairly quickly last night and found the 7 letter person, and after a morning of gardening I have picked it back up. After 20 minutes of grid-staring I must say I haven't the faintest idea which entry gets a "second attempt" or what 4 words lead to a "better start". Is access to ODQ or Brewer's needed to get this last step?
Hmm. My first thought when the h-g finished the grid was of this work but when I checked our ODQ there was nothing that appeared relevant. Under the Author's name it did refer to two of his works as being in the "first lines" pages (and isn't this an irritating thing when they are not also in the main body) but they were not the one I was looking. I didn't check the rest of the first lines.... foolish me! So if anyone else has ODQ 6 and wants to check out the first lines of a particular work by this particular author, persevere in that section for the unreferenced one!
Jogler, what do I do?
I have only the 5th version of ODQ. I am completely lost regarding the final solution of this puzzle I think I need more than a few subtle hints. I was very pleased to have completed the grid considering I had surgery exactly a week ago . Big C of the bladder. So, perhaps you can make me happy this week if i can finish this one off. Best wishes to everyone.

Get Well Soon Shoni, hope the rest of the treatment isn't too onerous.
Have finished the grid, found the person read all your hints tenn times and am still being totally thick! I cannot see how (or why) to change 35d and nothing I have tried to match with 13a throws any light. Have tried the appropriate volumes (to the 'person') and as jogler pointed out - too much to contemplate. Don't have an ODQ thyat gives first lines so stumped there. Am off to cut the hedge before it starts to rain again.
Wasn't the river pageant great, shame about the weather and the hyper-active beeb presenters...........felt they were very over-excited and should have been in bed hours before!
