Roans - I think the answer to 9 was 'steeds'/horses. 'Romans'= book, take away m/metres, and you're left with roans.
It's ROANS, Rach-46, as 9D also concerns horses and the book is Romans.
I have now completed everything, including solving the theme but I don't understand my answers to unclued 2D and 37D. Any tips please?
Ooops! Now my answer has appeared I realise that you were already given the same info by Neveracrossword. I should have scrolled down before!
I've no longer got the paper, but I did finish this - if you give the answers, I might remember any reasoning I had.
For thematic 2D I have "ORITR?" and have assumed that ? is a W making an anagram of WORRIT (confused Worrit?). I've also been looking for the name of a character played by the person concerned but no joy! As for 37D I have "IU". International Unit??? I'm really good at misleading myself!
Your 'IU' is correct - it's the surname of a character played by RL. The other word is the first name. You've got one letter wrong in the first name. The whole name has been reversed - 'bottoms up'. It's in the title of a play, by Bertolt Brecht I think . Hope this helps you get this finished off - I didn't want to just supply the answer.
Thanks Neveracrossword. Having convinced myself that a certain singer, rather than a country was correct I had, indeed, totally misled myself! It all makes sense now.
