You learn something every day,I never heard of swan upping before.
There's a swan expert lives in Richmond......allegedly.
Why ?
cupid, I know you're getting answers, but you might get more if you posted this in the Birdwatching section of Animals and Nature?
Oh, I remember her, shoota. What a hoot she was. Where's Swanlover gone?

Sorry haven't answered straight away and that it's in wrong section. It's a
genuine inquiry. My dad phoned me today and said he'd been invited on one
of these swan-upping thingies. For some reason he thought I'd know lots
about it because I go bird watching. I just wanted to get him a book for a
sort of family joke!

Thankyou for all of your replies even the funny ones!
Isn't it catching swans and clipping part of the beaks to signify ownership? Though I had thought ER owned all the swans.

I know all that, I think it goes back to medieval times. They ring and weigh
the cygnets and then put them back. That's about my knowledge. If I'd
known sooner I could have got my dad a book for fathers day which is this
sunday.
