I don't do any crosswords. I just answer the clues if I can. Having the wrong amount of letters did no harm.

He wasn't being pedantic in the slightest! When asking for help with the solution to a crossword question, it is not unreasonable to expect the clue to be provided exactly as it appears in the crossword and the number of letters correctly specified, including any already filled in.
