Have grasped the theme but the clues seem to be extremely opaque this week (apart from the easy ones) - is anyone faring better?

The suggestion made by tramart was that the answer features 'Sabre mixed up'. No more than that. Hence the search expression I gave was "the best that can be done without making other assumptions". Had I wanted to extend the hint by giving a more restrictive search, I would have done so.

Oh dear! What have I started? Is it pistols at dawn? I eventually saw the light with 11ac but it involved 3 misprints from where I started. I haven't really got to grips with Quinapulus and didn't find the suggestions here worked, so I obviously need to go on a course. It's Friday and time to say goodbye to this crossword I think.
I'm in the slow lane again and struggling to join the Friday week club. Still have three clues to solve - 3d, 10d and 29d. I'm wary about moving on to the misprints and thematic entries with so much uncertainty especially as I have far fewer clashes than there are clues. Perhaps this one is beyond me.

trux - I suspect you're right about the looming controversy. Although I haven't posted this week, I found a way of making an entry that falls between two stools - the cruciverbal equivalent of fudging accents in GSCE French when I couldn't remember whether it took an acute or a grave?... For my money, it would however be reasonable to assume that no special treatment is required.
Yes, a real storm I fear and I am probably up the creek with no paddle this time, though I got the es and as right in the awful Arsènal thing. These quibbles seem totally unfair to me and I have sent a message saying so. It isn't about solving a crossword, it's about drawing letters that suit some arbitrary ruling, when one has demonstrated that one has solved the crossword, probably after hours of hard work. I'm so annoyed that I feel like quitting the whole thing and having peaceful weekends.
If my Dad did listeners, then his 4198 would have been a horror show for sure - he writes e's in a Greek style. And he isn't alone in that. Rather harsh on people with that sort of handwriting. So yeah, despite my own submission being, I am fairly sure, correct, I think it was harsh to make a fuss about handwriting.
I am still happily chugging through this one, so no idea as yet about possible controversy. And I have no idea whether my scrawled "e"s were suitable. But I can say that my whole year's endeavours have been blighted by what to me was the unfairly biased klein bottle farrago from last year. Perhaps I should lighten up, but the amount of effort I put in to getting to the impenetrable solution only to come across something that was only knowable if you knew it (my reaction!) made me heartily sick of the whole Listener thing, and unable some weeks to summon up the energy to bother with the minutiae of the endgame. I went from an aspiring all correct to an occasional submitter, lots of meh, and I am only just feeling my way back. The subject matter of 4198 was so partisan and trivial that the meh factor seemed to affect so many people here. To then turn round and say "Yah! You're all wrong because you fail to meet our standards of calligraphy" is childish, and likely to put more people off than encourage them.
Similarly I'm still plugging away at it. I've four clues remaining and have spotted two possible thematic words. I've temporarily switched to 4202, and making good progress on solving the clues so should have some time to come back to this one. I'm utterly with everyone else on the 4198 decision - surely too small-minded for the Listener.
All clues done but knight moves seem very messy so I think I am doing something wrong. I thought 4198 was a pretty easy one with a trivial theme. But I did get the handwriting right - there was very little thematic stuff and if there had not been that little twist it would have been even more limited.
It's somewhat alarming that Ruthrobin and other stalwarts are considering their position re the Listener, following the kerfuffle over 4198. There's bound to be one unsatisfactory puzzle among the 50+ produced - not every one can be solid gold. And, after all, the memory of the Affair of the Curious Handwriting will soon fade, just like that of the Gunners' glory years. PS Wonder will Van Persie leave?
Very late to this one (still catching up post-honeymoon) and I think I can see the source of the controversy referred to by Trux. No all-correct for me this year as I couldn't solve 4199 in time sans-BRB, but I suspect I am one of those marked wrongly for 4198. I agree with RR that when individual handwriting of a particular letter causes failure, while it is perfectly evident that one has solved the puzzle, it is highly dispiriting. As for how to enter the contentious part of this one, I am going to enter it normally and hope not to fall on the sword again.
