I'm confused on the last two :

which looks like it should be Punch bags but the conflicting E comes from the third letter of :

24A Batter in progress for this famous cookery writer (6) B???O?

which looks like it should be Beaton?

Or not.

Yes, I want to write Beeton but that makes 15D ?E?S for the second word...

Maybe the compiler is mistaken in the spelling of Beeton because beat on looks good for 24a.

which I thought was Number.
