I've gone with hostia - latin for victim? host being the army?
Hostia is a latin term for a victim,
host = army, + IA
Question Author

Bradfords gives a defintion of victim as host .So I was getting there :)
Many thanks to you both .
It's in Chambers under 'host' third meaning (sacrificial victim) as the etymology at the end of the definition - see Azed's note at the end of the crossword entries.
