which suggests ANIMATED or maybe AGITATED - I can see NIM as a game, but I'm struggling with the rest of the clue.

I've never seen ani as a cuckoo. I was concentrating on nim as the game, so never thought of chess.

I don't usually do The spectator, but I'm off work for months recovering from a broken hip, so I've got LOTS of time on my hands!
