Also, 23d suggested answer from several previous enquiries is UTHER, in response to clue "and day was fixed for King after this old one ". If Uther is right , how does it fit the clue?
At the top of the crossword it says that it's 30 years since the setter, Cinephile, Rev John Graham, set his first FT crossowrd. Some of the answers do in fact refer to that fact and time frame.
Martin Luther King Day was indeed created in 1983 so fits the 30th anniversary theme in some of these clues. However, I can see nothing in the clue to indicate the dropping of the L of Luther to make Uther.
