Thanks guys....You don't see a lot of mistakes in the ST, so perhaps Mr Pearce was referring to another city, even if nobody has ever heard of it before !

To be fair to the ST, I'm sure if you did a quick straw poll, most people (non-Canadian!) would think Ontario was a city...

Quizmonkey...There was a bloke on the Lotto program last Saturday night who thought that the Algarve was in Spain ! AND he had been to the Algarve on holiday recently !

But the ST isn't the bloody Lotto program, nor is it the Sun or Star, so I think it would be reasonable to assume that the crossword compiler would have got his geography right.

Still, perhaps it was a mistake afterall.

I'm reading this late on a Saturday night about three weeks after you Brits get your Sunday Times cryptic, but I couldn't let this go uncommented:

The U.S. has STATES. We in Canada have PROVINCES. (I should know as I AM an Ontarian -- specifically, a Torontonian.)
