A fun puzzle, I thought. The theme was unknown to me, so some Googling once the message from the omitted letters was clear was needed. Wikipedia to the rescue. A little more work was needed to get all the unchecked letters to work out, but all in all not too difficult and an enjoyable workout.

A simple-minded interpretation of the preamble allows no ambiguity, Scree, and makes thematic treatment of the surname impossible.
I should have added "in my opinion" to my earlier post; I've been known to miss things before.
As I said, I don't see any instruction to treat the surname thematically.

H'mm - while I can see what you mean I'm not over-impressed with a thematic treatment which treats unchecked letters differently from checked ones. Still, I suppose that's the prerogative of the setter. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Definitely kicking myself for not getting this one right. Sigh... sent in the entry before I was sure of my solution. Never again.
