I hope a Speccie fan can give me a bit of help on this .
I've filled it all in,found the seven words which must be removed and filled in the only words which fit the unclued entries .
I'm at a loss as to what the thematic items are and where the chain begins .
Any help much appreciated before I chuck it across the room :)

I've no longer got the magazine, but I think my chain began with 'filigreed' (unclued, in the grid) and ended with 'siegfried' (one of the thematic items that doesn't appear). It took me a while to understand what I was doing - basically just scrambling/unscrambling letters which related to the theme. Hope this is of some help!

Many thanks for your help Neveracrossword .
I've been staring at it since Thursday and now the penny has finally dropped .
Glad you're getting it finished off - it was a tricky one to explain, or help with - as it's annoying to be stuck at the very last hurdle.

Lol ..when you mentioned Siegfried it all fell into place !
Brilliantly done by Mr Magoo .
All sorted now ,thanks again and Good Luck x

Can someone please tell me what comes between REFOLDING and ANGLE IRON ? It doesn't affect my grid, but I'm interested for completeness. The three possible words I have don't seem relevant to the theme, but I don't have a two word thematic answer either.
The two word thematic answer is an anagram of the title and you are missing two thematic words between REFOLDING and ANGLE IRON, the first part of the main work and another romantic opera.
Thanks crosswhit, you've been a big help. I was trying to bridge the gap in just one go, hence the false trail !
