clue??
11d Job comes up in provincial town (4)
I wondered if that should be "Jab comes up..."
Question Author
The clue is "Job comes up in provincial town"
Question Author
Hi Slaney - still don't get it if it's "Jab"
...because if it were "jab" then my answer and wordplay would work.
Reverse a word meaning jab to get a provincial town.
Question Author
Yes, you are right about the answer.
But I've just looked up "Job" in Chambers and there is a second definition:
To prod or peck suddenly. (So Job is the same as Jab.)
Ahh - thanks - I could have sworn I'd looked it up, but obviously not!
Question Author
I'd never have looked it up if you hadn't raised the possibility - so many thanks
Could someone tell me if I'm on the right track with this? My possible answer to the quotation and author is 8 (letters), 4 and 10 - this is what I've come up with after solving three-quarters of the clues(but with lots of clashes that I haven't yet sorted!). It would be great to know if I have -or haven't - lead myself astray.
Question Author
Hi Never,

The quotation is two words 8 and 4 letters, the author is two words 6 and 4 letters
Thanks, Boreas - that sounds as if I have half right and half wrong! I will carry on.
Question Author
Glad to help
My quote was correct, but I'd attributed it to the wrong person. Am off to make a start on the clashes now. Thanks again.
Question Author
Hi Never,

Once you have the quote it all comes together
I THINK I know what I've to do - I never like crosswords where I can't write in my answers as I go along. Are all the answers real words?
Question Author
The answers are all real words - but they have to be treated. So, the actual entries are not real words.

Question Author
The quotation tells us how to treat the words before entry.
Thanks - I should have been clearer (I DID mean, were the entries all real words?). That should help a lot - my other problem is that everything is in very light pencil so I have to peer to see what the answers (before treatment) are.
Question Author
My printer can photocopy A4, which is very handy for these types of crossword
Question Author
I would find it confusing to pencil the answers in before treatment. I just make list on a separate piece of paper.
