A very straightforward grid fill. Mmm..... but now how to fill the barred off cells?? I'm not so good when given artistic licence....

Most enjoyable though and thanks to Chalicea.

I'm puzzled by the final step, but otherwise Chalicea's usual offering of relatively easy but enjoyable clues.
An enjoyable puzzle, but unless you have the exact quotation from 1A, filling in the 3 letters might be problematic. Looking for 1A's quotes in ODQ7 was critical; googling combos of 1A and 41A was not helpful. So, the last step was a little unsatisfying.

I had the quotation and interpreted that to mean we were given artistic licence now I'm not sure if we are meant to enter the three letter word. Perhaps I'm overthinking it..... I'll ponder some more.
I'm in the same boat, most enjoyable clues, I have 18 of the letters (21 if the barred spaces are included) where is the other one???? Is it in row 5?

Indefinite article
I suppose Chalicea wouldn't mind a bit of embellishment... but I'm fairly sure it's nothing so elaborate required.
Well, got in at 1.30 and now all done and dusted. I'm following the instruction to the letter (or perhaps not?) so, despite the quote, no embellishment and no three letter word either.
About time we had a typo - Bryon - been missing them! The obvious 3 letters in the barred off cells for me.
Like everyone else I found this one very enjoyable.
Not being one for subtlety I've put in the obvious word, but I may embellish it.

Oh no, Christiana, now I have three options! I had thought of your possibility and then forgot it but it is a real option.

I hadn't noticed the typo, x_word_fan, perhaps I'm not such a pedant after all. Well spotted.
I'm willing to bet as much as 95 cents (0.61 pounds at current exchange rates!) that it's just the 3-letter word that goes in.
Fill (as per Chambers) "to put into until all the space is occupied", but perhaps I'm taking it too literally! It will be interesting to see which it turns out to be.
I thought I had cracked it......the obvious entry, but now you have all scared me to death wondering what else it could be......
Doesn't the subject of the puzzle spell her surname with a double "f", in which case it doesn't fit into 1 a/c?
Yikes, that is correct. That's a slightly bigger typo than "Bryon".

Revealing a bit too much there, surely, dr b?

Yes, I was puzzled by the apparent difference in spelling, but ODQ (I am assured) is clear on the spelling of the name, not sure why there is a variation or who is right, but it's clear who is intended anyway. Since ODQ is the more official reference we probably ought to stick with that, though.

As to what to put in the empty cells... no need to make things too complicated for ourselves!
The clarification was at the request of the setter; at this point there's hardly any question of who 1A is. I suppose I could have been more cryptic. But, I think the artist's own museums' web site is bit more definitive than the ODQ.
I'm pleased I finished the puzzle before reading some comments of fellow
solvers!
To me there was only one word which satisfied the full quotation and
accounted for the 22 cells representing the theme.
I am also a fan of Chalicea and am always pleased when he see her name as
the setter.
^^^I asked for that comment to be removed. It's funny how you can forget that this is all for public consumption!
