It can be bread either way but can't explain RANK.

Also:

30. What does this bird avoid dans le jardin? Jersey that's too small? (4)
Answer seems to be CHAT. But don't understand parsing.

Further to 30, a chat is also "A small potato of poor quality", and there is a Jersey potato.
