I found the clues quite tough to start but picked up speed as I got into the style - a cracking little EV and thanks to Jaques. Clever contruction.

One on the easier side, which is good since I worked it while traveling. Also a lucky (for me) quick spot of what was to be highlighted; usually grid-staring takes me forever.

I usually find clues with extra letters awkward, but populated the southern half of the grid fairly quickly, so with the Inventors name revealed, twigged quite early on what was to be highlighted, which helped with the northern half of the grid. I'm not sure I agree with you that the last word of 6d should be singular, my BRB doesn't mention either the singular or plural word, so perhaps it is redundant, and wings should be singular.

Chambers 2011 specifically states plural as ending with ae or as but I agree it sounds as if it should be one of those words that can be both singular & plural.

Haven't looked for 'what must be highlighted' yet, as have to stop for tomato watering etc. Like DocHH I usually find the extra letters awkward, but sailed through it this time - apart from 44a where I seem to have the wrong letter over. Will check again after tea.

In between scripts I have filled the grid and have all the redundant letters but still cannot see what needs highlighting. Will go back to it later but any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. Agree that the southern half of the grid is more accessible than the northern half.

If you have the name of the Inventor, then you should know what you are hunting for! Then if you have all the other redundant letters, look north! Pleased to hear you are still marking those scripts!

Oh Lord! You are all so damned clever!! Have only glanced at it so far and am not sanguine. The whole world seems to be out to get me today, so will apply the LGC's tomorrow.
Great news in that we have an EV compiler now doing the Xwords for the FG.......Hooray, a proper Xword again! Many thanks to Jim 360 for suggesting a path to take. The Xword Editor of the FG is for ever in your debt, as am I ... or I would be had my FG arrived this week with the new compiler in situ!!

As dr b suggests, spotting the highlighting needed was fairly obvious, but am still twitching over 44a. Is it me or is there an error here as the answer needs an 'e' but the cryptic cluing leads me to an 'o' instead, if I am to have the right letter over for the grid instruction.

C, the 3-letter word with an O in the middle, and the 3 letter word with an E in the middle instead, can be viewed as synonymous, if you look at the def of the "E" word in just the right way.

Many thanks for that. I looked at this again this morning and kicked myself for my lack of observation. Just seventy more scripts to go...but I will not hold my breath that that is the end of it.

Hi Novalis - your comment re. the scripts took me back. I remember taking some of them on holiday with me once in order to complete them. The last few always seemed a hard slog to me
