I saw you question that sandy, I think that the Americans call grilling broiling. And what we would call barbequing they call grilling.

I think.

I could be wrong...

It could be, I suppose it depends what it has to fit in with

Different names to get the same tasty result.
It`s American for grilled so could well be.
I prefer 'Broiled' - Chambers likes it as well. 'Grilled' (to me) suggests the heat is above the food...
I think broiling means the heat is above the food, so yes and no sandy

Broiled cheese on toast somehow sounds better than just grilling it.
I`m not sure about the relevance of where the heat is. Chargrilling/charbroiling are both done over the heat.
Broiled sounds like it's bubbling and damp, to me!
Stop it, you're making me hungry.
From Chambers -

broil ... to cook over hot coals; to grill (esp N Am)...
I'm going for a definite maybe here sandy

It's all academic, anyway. The elements in the oven have gone. I can have cheese and toast-using a dedicated bread toaster- to make the toast, but not grilled/broiled cheese on toast.
Wot, no flame-thrower, sandy?!
Question Author
No need. I've an old Primus blowtorch somewhere in the shed. But by the time I'd dug it out, got methylated spirits and paraffin, the appetite for cheese would probably have gone. I'm no Ben Gunn.
Is it actually possible to lose one's appetite for cheese? Amazing...
I have no appetite for cheese to lose - disgusting stuff.
Unless there is the merest hint of very, very mild cheddar in a white sauce in which leeks swim.
good shoota, I was close to despair for a moment there
