Many thanks
I see the rationale with me and holy, but how does homely respond to the clue?
homely can mean ugly.
Homely is a nicer word for ugly.
it's a euphemism for ugly or unattractive.
lacking in physical beauty or proportion; "a homely child"; "several of the buildings were downright homely"; "a plain girl with a freckled face" (homely)
Thanks all. We live and learn!!
My favourite example of its use is in The Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert & Sullivan, when Frederick tries to get one of the girls attracted to him:

"Oh is there not one maiden here,
whose homely face and bad complexion,
hath caused all hope to disappear,
of ever winning man's affection?
... If you will cast your eyes on me,
however plain you be I love you!"
jim - I sang along as I read that!
And a very nice girl you'll find her. She could very well pass for 43 in the dusk with the light behind her...♪♫
