Done the puzzle, got the theme and 4 thematic answers. However I am struggling to parse one answer.

"Second mowings of grass in Royal Society" (5)

"The wordplay yields the answer along with an extra letter that is not entered in the grid." I think that letter is "L" and the answer would appear to be "rawns".
But I cannot make sense of it....

This is not the prize crossword and if someone would rather email me a hint-not the answer-then do so to [email protected]
