...............at second glance there's a misprint: 14d is clued but doesn't exist, 15 & 18 exist, both unclued! Can we enquire somewhere?

Hi Maurice

I've emailed someone who I believe has the contact details for Doc at The Spectator. I'll let you know what happens.
Morning Daniel! Thanks. I share Maurice's concerns obviously. Do you have a line back to the Speccie?
..............AND 20d is given as having 7 letters, but there are only 6 spaces!
This is very disconcerting!

I've emailed and waiting for a response
That's good --- thank you, Daniel!
There is a perfect answer to the so-called 14d which will fit NOWHERE in the whole grid as it is! Seriously!
I haven't finished, but I have enough to know that 18 Down is a thematic answer. 14 Across fits the theme too.
Yes, this is a bit of a mess. I agree that there's a clear answer to the clued labelled 14d but which only fits if one erases the bar above the square numbered 15 and renumbers the third square of 13a as 14. Then 14d fits neatly as a 7-letter word. If one makes the corresponding deletion of a bar to allow 7 letters for 20d then it might make more sense.
Yes, that's OK with 20d being a person's name: a nice crisp clue.
Do you mean delete the bar under 36 for 20d?
Ahearer, thanks for untangling the 14 D tangle. I've got that one sorted and solved. All that's left is 20D - I've got possibilities but haven't parsed them yet.
Yes, Maurice, the bar under 36 is the one to delete -- and that keeps the grid symmetrical.
Thank you: progressing slowly!
Aside from all the confusion mentione I am struggling with 18d: I assume that this is the three-worder, possibly 4,2,4; I have only one fit for the second 4 but can make no sense of any overall answer. Any HINT please?
Sorry, had a senior hour.
Absolutely brilliant in the end!! Loved the finish! Better find my crayons now!
mathsman - it's not menu - it will all become clear when you "find" the hero!
Thanks Daniel as usual & have a Happy Birthday on Sunday!
Thanks also to AHearer for untangling the mess!
What an ordeal if you didn't know the hero!
Thanx 2 AHearer from me, too!
And Happy Birthday, Daniel: I didn't know!
