Only people that have done this puzzle will know what I'm talking about! But would much appreciate help on the "change" to 1a)

The word I have changed it to (and I've avoided the trap, I think) does not give me real words in the grid. It does, however, give me the given "number" I am looking for.

What am I doing wrong?

Either you have the wrong word at 1a, or something is a real word but you don't recognise it. Without seeing your solution can't tell with.

Maybe I have the wrong word? I found it in Bradfords under the word for 39a)

The word I found would make my solution to 1d) uerate.

2d) would be nuster.
