I can't see the wordplay for owls.
Buds seems to meet the second part of the clue but I can't see teh birds connection.
Maybe flowers refers to rivers?

I'm not aware that gamin means 'to take courage' so I think bibblebub's unman looks better.
That would allow BUDS although I can't see how that fits with birds, even allowing for the instructions

I find the instructions confusing though, so I maybe wrong about how BUDS can be arrived at
