Welcome to Title Builder Beta.

This small piece of kit is designed to make building your Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle question more effective. It should make finding your question easier for others and, the easier it is to find, the more likely someone is to answer it!

To build an easy to find question title simply select the paper and quiz, enter the quiz number if relevant and fill in the Publication Date. Once you’re happy click “Build Title” and the information should populate the Title field. Fill in the final required details of your question as you normally would, and click submit.

As this is a Beta we only have a limited number of papers and quizzes listed. If you think your favourite Quiz, Crossword or Puzzle should be listed here don’t hesitate to contact us.

Remember: You do not have to use the title builder - simply enter the title and question as you normally would and click submit!

I thought this was a reasonably straightforward offering from Poat. Fairly obvious what was going on from an early stage but none the worse for that. Just a few wordpalys to resolve and then it's back to Mr Magoo and Arden in the Magpie. Thanks Poat.

I thought it was excellent with some very ingenious clues. Would have been nice to be able to show we've done the whole thing but it is quite good fun doing the double check anyway. Thanks very much Poat and happy new year.

I confess I filled both grids before realising what this was all about. Now that the penny has dropped it's quite a slog to track down all the modifications. I don't want to be too explicit but at this stage I don't see how some of the material can yield to modification. Some brilliant cluing.

I also filled both grids before turning my attention to the modifications. It was then that I discovered I had them the wrong way round, and the mods were also required for me to resolve the ambiguities. But as has been said, a correct entry can be achieved without finding all of them.

Once I realised that the scale of the task was only half what I had thought it was all was plain sailing. Home and hosed now.

Scorpius

I finally worked out the sneaky definition in one of the 19dn clues, which had been puzzling me for some time, but there seems to be a mandatory element missing, unless the editors have recently relaxed the rules in that respect.

Since the final ambiguity was easily avoidable, it was obviously a deliberate part of the puzzle; I can only assume it was to ensure that solvers did at least do some of the matching of extra definitions to modified words.

Started this one this morning. I have a finished grid, or pair of grids, whichever, but I really think I am missing something here.

Still trying to puzzle out a couple of the wordplays - for the Cornish resort and Rackety standards clues... Might have to wait for the detailed solution for those. As I filled in the answers into the wrong grids, I came to the conclusion that if I were going to send it in it would be easier to cut out the 2 grids and sellotape them back in the other order!
