it was only 4 letters (not 5)
they won't give it yet, as its a prize crossword, so answer next week presumably.
i put guff, will be interesting to see what they say,
Gaff(er)?
Question Author
Oh, I didn't realise that it was a prize crossword, had assumed that it was a daily crossword with the solutions printed the following day.
wait till next week, if someone remembers.
they are prize crosswords, i do them but never submit for money, just for the hell of tearing my hair out.
but gaff doesn't mean rubbish... oh well, this argument has already been staged.
Question Author
I didn't intend to start the debate again, just thought that the answer had appeared in the paper today.

p.s. it's guff
-- answer removed --
look for tomorrows paper then -
Guff for rubbish..
Chambers has gaff meaning humbug; nonsense
oh, does it? That'll be the answer then.
For what it is worth, I thought Bibble's parse was correct - be interesting to see what the outcome is.
