Baffled by two clues in Monday's Guardian.

1 dn: "For instance, gets rid of diamond, being heartless" (8). I have ---C-R-D.

7 ac: "One hoping trick will work, actually being taken in by French" (8). I have ---E-S-R.

Apologies, I was trying to work the answer from the pattern shown. Is this a card game-themed puzzle? In some games if you are unable to follow suit (heart-less, eg), you might play a diamond.
