....... T = 20.......
mathsman - 4d is hidden in the clue
Thanks, Roslyn. However I am still completely in the dark as to how to apply the 'T information' in practice. I do have 4D and know what the resulting word is (related to cricket, inter alia); that still leaves me in mid-air.
replace the words by thier appropriate numbers - so "no words at all" in the grid - it really isn't cricket!
In spite of various hints and now realising that it has to be filled in with numbers as opposed to letters I still don't get it ,eg 5d to which the answer is Regan .(5) There are seven down lights in the grid so that's 18,3,7,1,14 for Regan .Then two more lights. What number do I put in the fifth light as there's no crossing letter .
Tbh I enjoy the Speccie every week but this is silly and I think it's destined for the bin :)
Roslyn.

Well, well; not cricket indeed. Thanks again.
Shaneystar, I think you must put each number in a box, so regan makes 7. Even with help it has taken me ages to realise. You're right, a bit silly.
Shaneystar: Teenieleek is correct. For example Regan is 18, *5* (not 3), 7, 1, 14, and this is to be entered in the grid as 1857114 with one digit per cell.

Mathsman: Your hint for 33D (which is the only thing which I still need) was "if you have the answer to 14, think of an example of that answer, cut off its tail and you have the three-letter result". This applies to 35D, not 33D. Ii have the last three letters of 33D, but just can't see it.
You are a star Helveticus.Thank you very much indeed .
I was beginning to think I had lost my marbles :)
Good Luck .
I think someone has already answered that, but it is rode.
Thanks to you too teenieleek ,good luck .
None so blind etc :)
Is anyone else struggling with 34A? It's all I have left & I just can't crack the wordplay. With only 3 letters & the first two already in I hardly dare ask!!!
Is it something to do with the metre of Tennyson's 'Charge of the light Brigade' or am I straw-clutching?
Oldenberg, think of the first few words of that poem.

Shaneystar, thanks for the bevue answer.
Thanks Cloverjo - I'm thinking... (to no avail so far. Not only just one pesky letter to find, less than half the alphabet to choose from!)
Half a league, Oldenburg ..Lea ..a measure of 80yards ( Chambers confirms)
Thanks Shaneystar - would you believe I've been misreading the bar & looking for a 3 space answer! Doh! All hope is lost - 'Nurse - the screens!!'
I have most of the answers - but still cannot see 4 down even though it is ( well ) hidden in the clue - amd know the method of entry. What is turning my hair even greyer are the unclued answers. I think I know what 7 down is but cannot see how it would link with any possible answers for the others. Any pointers would be much appreciated.
Dear Novalis.
It's the
French synonym for etudiant embedded in the clue.

Any clue for 38a?
38 A - a three-letter bird, followed by three letters that mean 'reserve'. The whole thing is an old, Shakespearean word for 'shuts'.
