Ohhh - could be either really couldn't it - spats answers support and fights not serious whereas spars is also a support and spars is scraps backwards without the 'p' (not serious). Think I'll go with spars.

How is a 'spat' a support?

It's a long gaiter or legging which given the freedom of interpretation in cryptic crosswords could be judged to support the legs of the wearer.
