Ev: Sunday Telegraph Enigmatic Variations 1144 - Qualification By Nutmeg
5 Answers
Some rather devious clues in this lot but once the thematic entry method's discovered everything fell into place rather nicely. I then went and checked out the source material -- always nice to get a prompt like that. I think that in this country the relevant authors are often overlooked, or get less attention than they deserve...
Anyway, thanks Nutmeg!

I certainly didn't find too many gifts on the first pass through the clues. But, to be honest in looking through them after completion they were all very fair. I solved quite a few, then took a leap of faith and started populating the grid.
In my version of ODQ the QUALIFICATION precedes the quotation from which the last two words are omitted.
Are you on a 2 or 3 year PhD?

jim360,
That might seem like a long time, but................. Mine was 3 years, but the first year was half course work and half project work which enabled me to pick up an M.Sc. on the way, although the project part of that was Ph.D project related. My first degree was Physics, but I transferred to Chem Eng, Particle Physics. I shared an office with 2 others whose ambition was to push back the boundaries of science, rather altruistic in my opinion! My goal was to generate sufficient data and put together a literature review that would allow me to "write up" even if I had left academia and was in employment and achieve the qualification! That is precisely what happened. I suggest you put together a strategy that will get you to where you want to be! Do not delay in starting the literature review!
