harrier
Hardier
Replace r(un) with d(aughter)
hardier-d for daughter eplacing the "r"
Question Author
That was my problem more fit would suggest hardier but harrier is a runner?
A runner becoming more fit
yes so athlete (harrier) becomes more fit (hardier) when you switch the r for the d

= hardier
More fit is harDier
Harrier ( to fit with 14 across)
That is why I went for harrier Danny.
Good morning Mac, Retro & Margo
Apologies I do not have the paper be guided by dannyk and mac.

Good morning everybody. It is a bit of a strange clue isn't it. I thought it must be harrier, which ties in with 14a, and assumed taking daughter for a run meant replacing 'd' with 'r' but the 'more fit' bit could suggest hardier. Will go with harrier.
I think that without the link to 14a I would go with hardier for 1a. But 14a attracts me to Harrier.
Just for the record in case the compiler pulls this out from his database again, the answer was Harrier.
