Scorps...could you please parse this a little more for me ! Where is Jack and New York, and where is the word PENNILESS defined within the clue ?

Thanks...I can see that now. But I always thought that the rule with cryptic crosswords is that the defined word should be the first or last word in the clue, or have I got that wrong ( entirely possible, of course ! )

While I am at it.......am I the only won that is getting a bit fed up with American slang being included in our British newspaper crosswords ? I wonder how much British slang is being used in American newspapers ? B****r all would be my guess !
