It seems that very likely is the clue Methyl - I have read on another forum of the tortuous way one has to solve these clues - my brain hurt just reading it.

I'm confused, sorry. Do we know the letter count for this clue-I'm not sure whether the 3,5 pattern is for this or was for clue 14- or maybe they are one and the same thing

the way to solve this puzzle is as follows:- The title of the puzzle can be any two-word saying eg tea break top brass etc ..the other clues which have only a ? beside them all relate to the title clue eg 'biscuits, milk or cakes, or trumpets horns etc...try solving the non ? clues and you will soon work it out...look at last weeks solution the title clue was "taste bud" other ? clue answers were 'Shoot ..sprout ...delecacy..hope this helps

i think the answer is "tax break" as 16a is 'levy (tax) and 1a 'fracture (break) both (?)clues........ a bit confusing puzzle but addictive
