Thank you slaney.Very astute to solve the problem.
The letters in the clue are given as (5,2,11).In effect it should have been (11,5,2). To say ''appearances keeps up'' is contrary to common usage.

Glad it's all sorted, but I presume/hope the setter did put 22a (keeps up) first before 15a (appearances) in the preamble:)
