You have to get the solutions and then fit them into a blank grid. To be honest it is above my level...I am a Times solver, no more ....but I am interested to get the answers to try and learn a higher level.
If I were you Wilbo,I would try pencilling some of the ones you had answered last night in - then it may start to fall in place and give you some letters in the others.
Please confirm, across clues, there are two with 7 letters, I can't find any across word spaces to fit 7 letters.
There are no down clues with 7 letters yet there are two down word spaces
to fit 7 letters.
Are the clues wrongly labelled or do I need Specsavers?

Interesting puzzle: I can see that the answer to the Virginia clue is ICING (ICE meaning to 'take out' in the US and then you have I (one) IN (member of the ruling party) 'wearing' CG (Croix de Guerre) )
Don't forget the answers in each list are in alphabetical order which should hep a bit
