canteen?
It used to be called a 'canister' - but that's going back about 100 yrs. Don't know about modern usage, sorry.
Mess tin?
Dixie?
Stomach? OK, I'm leaving.
I think 'canteen' was a water-holder DTC (I'm going back to Biggles-reading days).
Billy can.
A billy can was used for boiling water, not for holding food. cf. Waltzing Matilda.
Called it a dixie in the guides, but maybe soldiers had something different.
jourdain, still have quite a few Biggles books
Mess kit
Mess kit is the uniform to be worn on formal occasions.
I think my mum threw my 'Biggles' collection away (I could never get on with Worrals and her nailfile) as well as most of my (now practically priceless) books. Lucky you Daisy N.

I still held on to a few 'Billy Bunters'. :)
