What are the clues?
2d Spur (branch) - in 'SPQR' ("Senate & people of Rome"), replace 'q(uestion)' with 'u(nion)'

26d Limp - double meaning

26a Lawn - double meaning

Hi rodders - it's nice to post full clues so that people without the puzzle can also help :-)
Sorry Danny, I was going to type them...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPQR
...with Q replaced by U
26d limp..change a letter
Lawn - green/fabric
No problem L-i-K
Question Author
not room for 2d but 26a is - halt as they used to say - no way to serve up a lettuce and 26a is - green hanky material - 2d is SPOR ( acronym ) with o replaced by u

Thanks gang - sometimes not enough space to type the full clues - still haven't got 8 fruits but ntw !
^^ 26d is one of them

Have you altered 12a?
Question Author
Given up on fruits - what can you change pedlar to ??
Medlar
Interestingly some dictionaries give 'lame' as an alternative to 'halt' when used as an adjective - from old English apparently (q.v. as they used to say); but in this case whether the correct answer is 'limp' or 'lame' doesn't matter because they can both be altered to 'lime'.
Not so sure about 'lame' lettuce though!
Question Author
EllisB - that is why I ad lame entered but as you say limp is better for the lettuce bit !
To be honest I did the same until I saw the earlier posts on here - having said that I did think 'lame lettuce' was a bit ....er.....lame/limp.
:o)
