That will all end when they realise that 5p wont actually bankrupt them, we dont even think about here in Wales anymore.
Hopefully they wont get made, tw, that's the idea. The existing one's won't last long.

I was asking the Staff at Matalan Svejk how many plastic bags they hold in stock, too many to mention was her reply, she also said a lot of people wl not pay the 5p & just carry the goods out over their arms.
It's made a huge difference in Ireland. No more plastic bags blowing around getting stuck in bushes and trees..

The 5p charge, imo, is just a reminder to bring your own bags.
And if it doesn't work it should be raised to 20p
Side effect. Take a haversack with you to stop the powers that be stealing another small amount from you, pay for goods at the counter, turn around and find they've not allowed enough space as the haversack sweeps a shelfful of glassware behind you. Never had that problem before they were excusing a money grab with bogus environmental excuses.
Has had a huge impact in Scotland..most people take own bags now..only buy when caught out with unexpected purchase which NEEDS a bag..second nature to pop a bag in..and not nearly as much litter about byway of shredded plastic bags in trees fences etc...good move all round
What will people do when they want a 'Carry oot'
they carry it oot in their bellies !! lol...
That makes sense .. the money they save on carrier bags can be converted into beer tokens. I knew that there had to be a silver lining somewhere !
hee hee !! ^
So instead of reusing the free carrier bags people are now buying bin liners, nappy sacks, dog poop bags, feminine hygiene bags that truly can be used only once.
It's all very well using lifetime carrier bags but not so good when that fresh chicken or beef joint leaks. There is no way I would reuse that bag for shopping.
Meanwhile, the supermarket shelves are full of cucumbers, swede and cauliflowers wrapped in very thick plastic. The veg is prepacked in plastic bags (I'm looking at you, Aldi) and cans of beer are packed with extremely thick plastic rings to hold packs of 4 cans together.
What do the posh clothes shops do about bags now? If you've bought a dress for £200 or whatever, do they charge for their nice carrier bags? Part of the experience of shopping there is to have your purchases nicely wrapped in a show-off bag.

Haven't you got a sink?
The rest of your post I agree with.
I thought things like meat etc still got a free bag?
I take my own little folding bags with me now in my handbag but I do think its silly not to give bags away when buying clothes. If I put a white blouse in a bag which had been used for everything else it is bound to get marks on it. What would happen if I then wanted a refund later - would they accept it back? No problem to me as I would pay for a bag in the first instance, but I can imagine this happening if someone refused to buy a bag. Has this happened yet?
for gods sake what is 5p - pay the bloody money Ireland took it very well - both north and south without one bit of fuss. Think they thought there was enough fuss here for 40 years without a 5p knocking the spunk out of them.
Like talbot, I agree with most of HC's post, especially the unnecessary packaging on food.

However I like that we are now at least trying to combat some of our waste by introducing this charge.

And with respect Cloverjo, i you're lucky enough to be able to afford to pay £200 for a dress- are you really going to quibble over a 5p charge for your "show off bag?
my butcher gives me free bags of course for my runny meat. This has been one of the most talked about post of all times.
Of course I have a sink but I'm not convinced that all that bacteria can be washed out.

"a handful of recent studies have found that reusable bags can be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria such as Coliform and E. coli, as well as noroviruses. These germs can live for extended periods of time on the inside of reusable bags."

http://www.symptomfind.com/health/reusable-grocery-bags/

"..leading scientists are warning that the move represents a serious risk to public health because reused bags are often “heavily contaminated" with bacteria."
